Hospitalized for Atopic Dermatitis Flare Ups

I was first diagnosed with atopic dermatitis in 2001. I recently have been having flare-ups and have been hospitalized five times in the past three and half weeks.

My most recent hospitalization was on 10/6/22 and I was given steroid creams to alleviate the itching. Thankfully, the steroid creams are working.

Does anyone have any suggestions for over-the-counter products that work? Thank you. I appreciate any advice.

I think it tends to be trial and errror - Would be great if brands had a trial pack as non precription creams are so expensive to risk trying. Aveeno Dermexa has been great for my son's face - definitley better than the greasy emolliants doesn't seem to make him as hot or cause irritaton

Hi <inline-mention username="coughlinlynn089" user-id="6619189"/> , its so tough to suggest OTC products since there are so many of them and we are all so different. I've had to go through (and sometimes still do) a lot of trial and error, personally. Right now, vanicream and Eucerin seem to be doing best for me, but it honestly changes at times too. I personally can't use topical steroids as I've been through topical steroid withdrawal, so I just have to experiment sometimes, unfortunately. I'm also so sorry to hear your eczema is so severe and that you've been hospitalized so much. Do you mind if I ask how you are doing now? -Nina (AtopicDermatitis.net Team Member)

Have you tried Eucrisa 2% ointment? It costs about $700 for a small 60 gm tube from Pfizer but if your insurance covers it then you might be able to get it for $40. It works as good as the stronger steroids as far as making the lesions disappear but the steroids are the best for the itch. Used together it might reduce your steroid use and those lower the impact on your organs while reducing the chance for steroids dependence & the steroid withdrawal problems. I generally only use steroids on the really itchy lesions, & even with those I’ll apply Eucrisa for one half the day and the steroids for the other. Also, try far infrared light therapy. It’s less dangerous than UV-B. UV-B is a very strong & a relatively safe short term treatment as long as it is administered by qualified technicians working under the supervision of dermatologists.
