Winter Remedies

As the weather cools down and the winter season approaches, dry skin can get more difficult to avoid. What’s your best DIY recipe for dry, cracked skin?

  1. My favourite DIY moisturizer begins with 1/2 of a tub of Vaseline Intensive Care Problem Skin Therapy. To which I add:
1 tsp of glycerin which is hygroscopic, so it draws water in from the environment

1 tsp Aloe Vera gel for its antiseptic and anti inflammatory properties

2 tsp olive oil, or light mineral oil, almost any light oil you like would work

1 - 2 tsp distilled water until you get the consistency you feel is best for your skin. If you don’t have distilled water, you could boil tap water and let it cool.

    1. Chrystal from FB kindly shared her recipe for homemade "Whip":

-About 1 cup of Shea butter
-3/4 to 1 cup of cocoa butter
      -1/2 cup coconut oil
-1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
-2 to 3 tablespoons of almond oil
-5 to 10 drops rosemary oil
-5 to 10 drops peppermint oil
( I have heard about the benefits of frankincense. I will let the group know when I do)
Then mix, melt ingredients ( I do not thoroughly melt, just enough- some most liquid)
Freeze until outward mixture semi solid, inward liquid. Mix with hand mixer on low to high speed until fluffy, whip cream like. Store in your cleaned container. I like the anchor, Rubbermaid covered bowls. May need 2 medium bowl or one large.

      Thanks Chrystal!

      1. My 6 year old son has eczema and is prone to severe bbreakouts. I am using coconut oil mixed with Vaseline with Cocoa Butter. I melt the two together and put into muffin tins and place in the freezer. It makes little bars which makes it easy to apply and the cooling helps his skin. I keep them in a container in the freezer. It has gotten so much better and his skin is soft. He is super happy and says he is a normal boy now.

        1. My doctor has recommended olive oil for inside ears--3 drops then stuff a cotton ball in for a little while. He suggested to do this once every two weeks. So far, so good! It helps keep things in check!
