Methotrexate for Atopic Dermatitis

The dermatologist wants to start me on methotrexate 25mg and folic acid. I'm concerned about future side effects. After researching AD I'm trying to control the discomforts using pH balanced soap and body cream to keep my skin hydrated. I've been doing this for a week and my skin irritation has improved. I'm holding off starting the methotrexate until my next appointment in 2 weeks. I think the it seems excessive. Thoughts anyone? Thank you.

  1. welcome, and we're so glad that you feel this safe place to come and share. That is great that you've made some changes to your soap and creams and noticing a difference already! Hopefully this will last, and give relief from your AD.

The feeling your experiencing, being concerned about possible side effects from medication is very normal, and I know that many others have felt the same, I know I have. That's great that you've done research, just keep in mind there is so much information available these days which can be a blessing and a curse, and sometimes it can easily scare us away.

Have you shared your concerns with your doctor? Have you asked him/her if there are other forms of treatments that you can try, before trying this?

At the end of the day, you know how well you are or aren't managing with your current AD symptoms, and how it's impacting your day to day living, and whether or not you're comfortable to take some possible risk, at the price of having better skin, sleep, mental health.

I personally just went through the same experience after deferring a medication for two years. I am happy to share more if you'd like.
