How do I make the salve?
Prep Time: 10min
Formulating Time: 25min
Batch Size: 30g/1oz
Ingredients (by volume):
- ½ tsp dried red clover flowers
- ½ tsp dried dandelion leaves
- 22.5g/0.75oz avocado oil
- 7.5g/0.25oz beeswax
Tools:
- Oven mitts
- 30oz glass container
- Small glass beaker/cylindrical container
- Pan filled with water ½ of the way
- Pyrex measuring cup
- Strainer
- Fine mesh bag
- Spatula
- Large spoon for mixing (optional)
- Tongs (optional)
Directions:
- FPreheat the oven to the lowest setting.
- As the oven is preheating, take the dried red clover flowers and dried dandelion leaves and put them into the small glass beaker/container, then pour in the avocado oil, submerging the herbs in the avocado oil. If you need to use a utensil to push the herbs completely into the oil, do so.
- Once the oven is preheated, I put the herbal oil infusion into an oven-safe container like a baking tray, put on some oven mitts, and put the baking tray onto the top rack with the door left ajar. I let the oven run for 15 min for the herbs to infuse into the oil.
- After 15 min, I turn off the oven and I take the baking tray with the herbal oil infusion out of the oven and place it somewhere heat safe to cool down for another 15 min. If I want a stronger herbal infusion, sometimes I let the petals infuse in the oil at room temperature in a cool, dark place for three days or so.
- After the herbal oil infusion cools down to room temperature, I remove it from the baking tray and set it aside. (Can also wear oven mitts as a precaution before removing the mixture in the Pyrex measuring cup from the pan.) Then I take the Pyrex measuring cup and put in the beeswax. Then, I place the strainer on top of the Pyrex measuring cup and the fine mesh bag over the strainer.
- I take the herbal oil infusion and pour it into the strainer-fine mesh bag setup and strain out the herbs separately from the oil into the Pyrex measuring cup.
- I put the pan with the water filled half-way through onto the stove and turn it on high until the water starts to sizzle. Then I lower the heat to medium and put the herbal oil and beeswax mixture onto the water-filled pan to melt together. For me, this seems to take about 10 min.
- Once everything is melted, give everything a thorough mix with a spatula or spoon.
- Pour the mixture into a glass container and let it set uncovered at room temperature until it hardens. This process can be accelerated by putting it in the refrigerator. Once it is set, put on the lid when not in use.
Storage & Maintenance Tips: This salve keeps for up to 2 years and its shelf-life is extended with refrigeration.
When not in use, make sure to keep it sealed and out of direct sunlight to avoid melting, premature oxidation, and spoilage.
What benefits do red clover and dandelion have?
Red clover is known for being really good for anti-aging skincare since it helps to boost collagen production, creating firmer, more supple skin as well as helping to even out the complexion.1 Both qualities that are highly useful for me when I have eczema and am dealing with skin that looks like it’s aging as well as discolored when dealing with rashes and their after-effects on my skin tone. In ancient folklore, it is rumored that red clover — which is similar to the four-leaf clover — can bring good luck and fortune, as well as dispel negative energy. And if true, both would definitely be useful for trying to heal from eczema and all the baggage and judgment that comes with it.
Dandelion leaves are a really good lymphatic herb. They can be helpful to help the body to remove toxins from the body. When consumed internally either through a tea or a salad, it is said that dandelion leaf is great for cleansing the liver, which is very helpful to detox the body and beneficial for healing eczema.2,3,4
Together, I find this herbal combination helpful for creating movement physically in helping the body to heal the skin and support the lymphatic system. And even emotionally, I feel like this herbal combo seems to just help me to let go of the past, let go of the pain I'm feeling in the moment with itchiness, and to just progress on with my day.
