Skincare tips?

Hi!
I have AD on my face, legs & in my ears. I didn’t ever have it until I was about 50. Though, it might have been earlier because I never was able to use my mom’s or anyone’s skincare routine. It always made me breakout, itch like crazy or make my skin an oil slick.

Lately, I’ve gone back to what I was doing in my 20s, 30s, 40s: rinse with warm water & dry with cotton (no nap) towel. About once/week I exfoliate gently with a scrub mitt in the shower. Sadly, I can’t do that to my ears! They are the worst now!! The topical cream wasn’t compatible with my hearing aid, so I had to stop using the cream. And that’s the worst ear. (The other ear is totally deaf—doctors went through my ear & brain to remove a benign inner ear tumor 15 years ago, so I don’t care what I stick in there. 😄) My eyebrows (what’s left of them) itch and flake into my eyes. Ugh! My legs tolerate shea butter occasionally.

I never wear make up, haven’t worn any since my brother’s wedding in 1993! I just can’t. It feels awful. And my face doesn’t like me afterwards! LOL! Anyone have the same issues or have any ideas, tips, tricks to stop my flakey eyebrows? Thanks!

  1. sounds like you're taking all the right steps in trying to work out what is causing your flares. Let us know how you get on. We wish you well! Pete😀

    1. Hi - thank you for sharing your story with us. I experience the same thing with my eyebrows flaking a ton, and tend to lose most of my eyebrow hair when I flare up really bad because of how irritated they get. Personally, they do grow back on their own in time, and I can’t use many topical products as my face doesn’t seem to like that generally.

But in the case of eyebrows, I have found that using a tiny bit of castor oil can be really helpful for eyebrows. (And awesome for hair in general!) So that might be something to look into, and it’s fairly cheap to purchase some. Just make sure you patch test so you know it’s okay with your skin first! Hope that helps and if you do try it, let us know how it goes! Sending you lots of love. -Nina (Team Member)

      1. hi! I tried out the castor oil. It works very well. Thanks for the suggestion. Since I was able to find the pure oil, my skin doesn’t protest! I’m also starting to use it around my nose and around the openings of my ears. So far, so good. 👍🏼

    2. Hi . Thanks for sharing your experience with eczema with us. I have had eczema in and around the ears and it can get really sore so I can absolutely empathise with you here. When my skin gets really dry and flakey I would drink lots of fluids and reduce a lot of the foods that I knew triggered my eczema. That would at least give me a platform to start healing. This is how I dealt with it. We are all different and as we always say here, what works for one person doesn't necessarily for another! I wish you well. Pete

      1. I haven’t figured out if any food triggers my eczema since it seems to just always be there. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I drink lots of water because I’ve gotten used to it. I haven’t had pop or alcohol in more than 20 years. I’m making a food log to both help with diet and to see if there’s any food triggers. Thanks for the suggestions. If the food log doesn’t show much, I’ll need to look into my clothes and shampoo & body wash.
