Traveling with eczema

What are your tips for traveling with eczema?

  1. I have a few. I always take a bottle of Dove Sensitive Skin foaming body wash. It has a pump that locks so that's helpful. I also take a small bottle (I like to repurpose the Scope travel size mouthwash bottles once I've finished using it) and pour some of that body wash in it to carry in my pocket for public restrooms. If flying, I just buy a new bottle of body wash where I'm staying and use it rather than try to measure a regulation amount for a flight. I use it for both shower and sink side. I make sure I take my own sheet. Usually just a queen size top sheet and snuggle into it like a taco shell. I'll take a Pillow case to lay over the top of their pillows or bring my own pillow. Hard to do when flying though. I have to be especially careful because one year I not only exacerbated my eczema, I also got hives from the laundry detergent in the towels and sheets at a lower end hotel we stayed at. That ended up with an ER visit because I wasn't sure what was going on. I made sure to always pack two sheets after that.

    1. These are some great tips. Thank you for sharing! Best, Sam S. (team member).

  2. Usually, I make sure to slather on plenty of my favorite moisturizer throughout the day. Finding the same moisturizer abroad can be a hassle, so I pack enough to last me the entire trip. I only use skincare products that I'm sure won't irritate my eczema. Changing products can sometimes trigger a flare-up, and that's the last thing I want on vacation. And, since there's a limit on how much liquid you can bring on a plane, I fill travel-sized bottles with my must-have skincare items. This way, I don't have to check my bag or leave my skincare routine behind.

    1. these are all great tips! Avoiding a flare on a trip is definitely key. All the best, Sam S. (Atopic Dermatitis team).

  3. Hi ! Thank you for creating this forum!! Personally my tips can vary depending on what type of traveling your doing, but here are my main things I always keep with me when I'm traveling throughout each month:

    1. Sun screen, I need this so much, especially in the summer. If I get a sunburn then my skin will just feel like an unending nightmare.

    2. I always use & take lotion with me wherever I can. My hands get so dry and cracked, especially in the winter. Its unbearable, and I can't go a day without it.

    3. lastly, I always take my soothing skin balm whenever I have a flare up (or even when I don't have one, you never know when you're gonna need it!) it helps my eczema stay calm and not be as itchy as it would be without it.

While their not tips, those are usually what I try and keep on me whenever I have to do any sort of traveling, so I hope it helps!😊 - Abigail, Team Member

    1. That is really exciting that you will be travelling. As someone who has severe AD here are my top two travel tips that I have found helpful.

      1) I like keep whatever would be very difficult to replace in your carry on (meds, lotions) Even though I may not need those items while in flight, I make sure to bring them in carry on in the event that my luggage got lost or delayed. This gives me great peace of mind.

      2) I find that my face becomes very dry while in flight, I try to drink more on travel day, and carry a mini travel size of moisturizer and moisturize well throughout the flight.

Enjoy your trip, and if you learn of more tips after your trip, please share with us.
